1. Area and university description

The Krasnoyarsk region, an area five times the size of France and 33 times the size of England, sits close to the center of Asia and spans from the very north of Russia to the very south. The Yenisei river, one of the largest and longest north-south flowing rivers, runs through the whole region.

The climate of the Krasnoyarsk region is continental, but conditions are also influenced by the anthropogenous impact of the reservoir cascade.

Vast territories of the region are rich with forests; in fact, Krasnoyarsk has a greater forest area than any other region of Russia.

Krasnoyarsk, the capital of the region, is a major industrial and cultural center of Siberia, as well as the main strategic center of aircraft and space industries. Here Research and Production Association of applied mechanics named after academician M.F. Reshetnev, Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Krasmashzavod" and Siberian State Aerospace University named after academician M.F. Reshetnev are linked together.

The University was founded in 1960 as a branch of the Krasnoyarsk Polytechnic Institute. Today it is an institution of higher education offering educational programs in more than 30 different areas and having graduated over 11,000 Bachelor’s-, Specialist’s-, and Master’s-level students. However, SibSAU is constantly expanding its endeavors both in terms of training specialists and in carrying out research and development projects for various companies and organizations. A top priority is internationalization; the University is very eager to work with students and professionals from different parts of the world.

ImageThere are currently 11,000 students enrolled at SibSAU, studying in eight different schools including the Institute of Civil Aviation, the Institute of Computer Science and Telecommunications, etc. The Institute of Space Techolody is a home to departments such as Physics, Technical Mechanics and Electrical Engineering. Total number of teaching staff is over 800. More than 150 of them are doctors of sciences and professors, and more than 400 are docents and have PhD.


2. Professors

Highly qualified teachers head the program. The staff consists of SibSAU professors from the Institute of Machine Science and Innovation, the Institute of Computer Science and Telecommunications and the Research and Education Center «Closed Space Systems» who teach science courses.


3. Program description

ImageThe Institute of Machine Science and Innovation, the Institute of Computer Science and Telecommunications and the Research and Education Center «Closed Space Systems» of the Siberian State Aerospace University provides a unique program for foreign students in the areas of variety of spacecrafts, fundamentals of automatic systems of spacecrafts, fundamentals of scientific and engineering creativity, physical fundamentals of space flights, substances and energy flows cycling, control theory, expert systems, fundamentals of artificial neural networks, image processing and analysis. It allows students to study the principles of closed space systems design and functioning; to observe small spacecrafts elements producing process; to explore deep space from the uniquely located observatory; to have an adventure around the Siberian Region; to feel the power of the full-flowing river Yenisei.

The program totals 72 academic hours or 2 cps (ECTS points).

Students have 16-18 class hours per week, excluding excursions.

The language of instruction is English.

Eligible participants:

The program is targeted toward undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate science students or students with a basic level of knowledge in physics and computer science.

Courses description:

  • Control Theory and Automatic Control Theory in Space Systems

This course covers the elements of system analysis and control theories for different objects, its basic principles and kinds. The students will model procedures of automatic control.

  • Basic Physics of Flight Support

The principles of launches, orbital, interplanetary and deep space flights will be discussed starting with Newton's universal gravitation law and laws of motion as a basis. Also various space engine technologies will be explained along with their uses. The explanations will be accompanied by tasks on estimating different parameters of space flights such as velocities, forces and orbits/trajectories dimensions.

Methods: value estimation using physical laws

  • Equipment of Spacecraft Automation

The course on equipment of spacecraft automation contains the description of electronic elements and equipment, used on boards of spacecrafts, touches upon the fundamentals of digital technology and microprocessors.

  • Substances and Energy Flows Cycling in Closed Space Systems

This course covers the problems of substance and energy flows circulation in closed ecosystems, the search of balance between separate ecological components. It also considers approaches for choosing optimal species for closed space systems and its quantity.

  • Expert Systems on Space Systems

The main aim of any expert system is to replace some human expert with computer program. It is especially important during space travel because you can't stop at service station if there is any problem. On completing this course you will know how it can be done.

  • Fundamentals of Image Processing

Introduction into image processing: color models, methods of color correction, algorithms of noise reduction. Practical implementation of methods and algorithms for image processing in RAD Studio 2010.

  • Fundamentals of Engineering

This course studies the methods of creativeness activation in engineering and its place among other activities. Emphasis is on the methods of collective creative work. The methods of heuristic devices, search of engineering solution and functional-cost analysis will be covered.

  • Variety of Spacecrafts

This course covers various spacecrafts, meant for interfacing, television rebroadcast, navigation, geodesy, and scientific researches. The course is of cognitive nature and includes a visit to the museum of cosmonautics of SibSAU.

  • Fundamentals of Artificial Neural Networks

This type of mathematical objects can be used in wide range of applications, from object classification to control of complex objects. During this course you discover the similarities and differences between human brain and artificial neural network.

Practical study covers processing of satellite images of Earth’s surface using neural networks.

Methods: numerical investigation, comparative analysis, forward chainig, backward chaining, synthesis and analysis of amplification and signal processing equipment, problem solving using neural networks, value estimation using physical laws, methods of heuristic devices, methods of search of engineering solution, methods of functional-cost analysis

Methods: computer modelling as one of the main methods.

At the end of the course, students will take exams and receive a certificate.

5. Dates and enrollment procedure

Application deadline SibSAU – May 15, 2012


6. Visa

To obtain a visa to enter Russia you need to receive an official invitation from SibSAU. As soon as we get a package of documents from you, SibSAU will send you an invitation by mail or e-mail. (depending on requirements of Embassy/Consulate of the Russian Federation in your country). After you receive an invitation, you can apply for the visa at the Embassy/Consulate of the Russian Federation in your country.


7. Russian Language

Your level of Russian is not important, as the program is conducted in English and an introductory Russian course is available. Students will receive a certificate upon completion of this course.


8. Cultural Program

ImageThe program includes a variety of cultural activities. Students may enjoy visiting the experimental production base for creating small spacecrafts, the Training and Demonstration Center of Rocket-and-Space Equipment, the Flight Control Center, the Оbservatory, the Nature Reserve "Stolby", the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Power Station, the Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, as well as the house-museums of a famous Russian artist Vasily Surikov and a famous Russian writer Viktor Astafyev. Students will also have tour around the city of Krasnoyarsk getting to know its landmarks, sculptures and fountains.


9. Number of students

The minimum number of students for the program is 8; maximum is 15.


10. Costs

The program cost is 785 euro. This includes tuition, cultural program, accommodation, breakfast and dinner. Accommodation will be provided in the Krasmashevsky Sanatorium Sanatorium, which is near the university. Double rooms are available. Students may need about 150-200 euros to cover lunch expenses. Travel expenses are not included.

All the applicants have to provide initial payment (200 euro) until May 30, 2011.

Cancellations after May 30 will have a 150 euro - service charge deducted from the amount paid.

Total amount (785 euro) has to be paid until July 15, 2011.

11. How to apply

  1. Step 1 - register on-line.
  2. Step 2 - receive a confirmation e-mail from a coordinator.
  3. Step 3 - send a package of documents to the International Cooperation Department of SibSAU by mail:
  • printed out registration form with a signature,
  • copies of all passport pages.
